Citi ThankYou Points: The Complete Transfer Partner Guide

Citi ThankYou Points is the most underrated transferable currency in points hacking. With 16+ airline and hotel transfer partners, the strongest mid-tier earning card on the market (Strata Premier at $95), and exclusive access to American Airlines AAdvantage miles via transfer, Citi occupies a lane that no other program fully replicates.

This guide covers everything: the full transfer partner list with ratios and timing, the five highest-value sweet spots with complete math, the Citi card ecosystem and trifecta strategy, and an honest comparison to Chase, Amex, Capital One, and Bilt so you know exactly where Citi fits in your points portfolio.

If you are brand new to the hobby, start with our beginner's guide to points hacking first. This guide assumes you understand the basics of transferable currencies and how transfer partners work. For a head-to-head comparison with Chase's equivalent card, see our Sapphire Preferred vs. Strata Premier breakdown.

All 16+ Citi ThankYou Transfer Partners

Citi ThankYou transfers at 1:1 to every airline partner unless otherwise noted. Most transfers complete instantly or within a few hours. Here is the complete partner list as of April 2026.

Citi ThankYou Points transfer partner matrix showing all 16+ airline and hotel partners with transfer ratios and timing

Airline Partners (14):

  • Aeromexico Club Premier (1:1): Useful for SkyTeam partner awards to Latin America and Europe. Aeromexico runs its own flash sales on award space, and Club Premier miles can book Delta flights at competitive rates.
  • Air France/KLM Flying Blue (1:1): One of the best partners in the Citi ecosystem. Flying Blue runs monthly Promo Rewards sales that discount business class on partner routes by 25-50%. Transfers are instant.
  • American Airlines AAdvantage (1:1): Re-added in July 2025 and arguably the most important Citi partner. Citi is the only $95-annual-fee path to AA miles via transfer. AA miles unlock Oneworld partner awards on Qatar Qsuites, Cathay Pacific business class, JAL First Class, and Finnair business to Europe.
  • Avianca LifeMiles (1:1): Books Star Alliance flights with zero fuel surcharges. LifeMiles has some of the lowest award prices for United Polaris and Lufthansa business class. A top-tier partner across multiple currencies.
  • Cathay Pacific Asia Miles (1:1): Books Oneworld flights, including Cathay Pacific's own business and first class products (among the best in the world). Also books Japan Airlines, Qatar Airways, and British Airways via the Asia Miles chart.
  • Emirates Skywards (1:1): Access to Emirates First Class (the most famous first class product in commercial aviation) and Emirates business class. Dubai hub connectivity is excellent for routes to Asia, Africa, and the Indian subcontinent.
  • Etihad Guest (1:1): Books Etihad business class and select partner flights. Etihad Guest occasionally runs flash sales on award pricing, making transfers worthwhile during promotional windows.
  • EVA Air Infinity MileageLands (1:1): EVA Air operates the Royal Laurel business class product, consistently ranked among the world's best. Award space on transpacific routes is limited but available with advance planning.
  • JetBlue TrueBlue (1:1): Revenue-based program, so value is consistent at 1.3-1.5 CPP. Best use is JetBlue Mint business class on transcontinental routes.
  • Qantas Frequent Flyer (1:1): Books Qantas flights and Oneworld partner awards. Particularly useful for routes to Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific. Qantas Classic Flight Rewards offer predictable pricing.
  • Qatar Airways Privilege Club (1:1): Direct access to Qatar Qsuites, widely regarded as the best business class product flying today. Award availability is limited but does release, particularly from Doha. Transfers are instant.
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer (1:1): Books Singapore Suites (the most famous first class product in aviation) and Singapore business class, including the A380 Suite product. Transfer takes 12-24 hours.
  • Thai Airways Royal Orchid Plus (1:1): Books Thai First and Business Class as well as Star Alliance partner flights. Thai's award chart is relatively generous for regional Asian routes.
  • Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles (1:1): One of the most generous award charts in the business. Turkish miles book Star Alliance flights at prices significantly lower than what United charges for the same seats. A top 3 Citi partner.

Hotel Partners (2):

  • Choice Privileges (1:2 favorable): Every 1,000 Citi points becomes 2,000 Choice points. Choice hotels are budget-oriented, but the 1:2 ratio makes this one of the few favorable hotel transfers in the ecosystem.
  • Wyndham Rewards (1:1): Standard 1:1 ratio. Wyndham properties are generally lower-tier, but specific vacation club and resort properties can deliver decent value at 8,000-15,000 points per night.
Key Difference
Citi does not transfer to World of Hyatt, IHG, or Marriott. If hotel redemptions are a priority for you, Chase Ultimate Rewards (which transfers to Hyatt 1:1) and Amex Membership Rewards (which transfers to Marriott and Hilton) offer stronger hotel partner networks. Citi's strength is airlines, not hotels.

Top 5 Citi ThankYou Sweet Spots (With Full Math)

Citi ThankYou Points deliver the highest value when transferred to airline partners with generous award charts. These five redemptions are the best uses of Citi points available today.

Sweet Spot 1: Turkish Miles&Smiles for United Polaris Business Class

Points required: 45,000 Turkish miles one-way from the U.S. to Europe.
Cash price equivalent: $3,500-$6,000 for United Polaris business class on popular transatlantic routes.
Cents per point: 7.8-13.3 CPP.

This is the single most accessible premium cabin sweet spot in the Citi ecosystem. Turkish Miles&Smiles prices Star Alliance business class at 45,000 miles one-way to Europe. The same flight costs 70,000-88,000 United miles through United's own program. You save 25,000-43,000 miles by booking through Turkish instead of United. Transfer 45,000 Citi ThankYou points to Turkish at 1:1, search for United Polaris availability on United.com or Seats.aero, then call Turkish to book.

Sweet Spot 2: American Airlines AAdvantage for Qatar Qsuites

Cash price equivalent: $6,000-$9,000 for Qatar Qsuites from JFK, IAD, ORD, or IAH to Doha.
Cents per point: 8.6-12.9 CPP.

Qatar Qsuites is considered the best business class product in the sky. Sliding doors, a lie-flat double bed configuration for couples, impeccable service, and a DOH hub that connects to virtually anywhere in Asia, Africa, and Europe. Transfer 70,000 Citi ThankYou points to AA at 1:1 and book through AA.com. AA releases decent Oneworld partner availability, particularly 330+ days in advance.

Sweet Spot 3: Avianca LifeMiles for Star Alliance Business Class (Anywhere)

Points required: 63,000 LifeMiles one-way from the U.S. to Europe in business; 78,000 to Asia.
Cash price equivalent: $4,000-$8,000 for Lufthansa, Swiss, or ANA business class on equivalent routes.
Cents per point: 5.1-10.3 CPP.

Avianca LifeMiles charges no fuel surcharges on any Star Alliance partner redemptions. That is the key differentiator. British Airways charges massive surcharges; many other programs add them on specific carriers. LifeMiles does not. Transfer Citi ThankYou points 1:1 to LifeMiles, search Star Alliance availability, and book online. LifeMiles also runs frequent promotions offering discounted partner awards, sometimes pricing business class at 50,000-55,000 miles instead of 63,000.

Sweet Spot 4: Air France/KLM Flying Blue Promo Rewards

Points required: 32,000-40,000 Flying Blue miles one-way in business during Promo Rewards sales.
Cash price equivalent: $3,000-$5,000 for business class on Air France or KLM to Europe.
Cents per point: 7.5-15.6 CPP.

Flying Blue runs monthly Promo Rewards sales that discount specific routes by 25-50%. A transatlantic business class award that normally costs 53,000 Flying Blue miles can drop to 32,000-40,000 during promotions. Transfer Citi ThankYou 1:1 to Flying Blue, check the Promo Rewards page on the first of each month when new promotions launch, and book immediately when your route appears. These sales are the highest CPP hotel or flight redemptions regularly available through Citi.

Pro Tip
Flying Blue Promo Rewards launch on the first of every month. Bookmark the page and check it monthly. Promotions last about 6 weeks, and the best routes sell out quickly. Sign up for Flying Blue email alerts so you never miss one.

Sweet Spot 5: Cathay Pacific Asia Miles for Cathay Business or First Class

Points required: 85,000 Asia Miles one-way from the U.S. to Hong Kong in business; 110,000 in first.
Cash price equivalent: $5,000-$8,000 in business; $12,000-$18,000 in first.
Cents per point: 5.9-16.4 CPP.

Cathay Pacific operates one of the most respected long-haul products in the world. Their business class consistently ranks in the global top 5, and first class is among the most refined experiences available commercially. Transfer Citi ThankYou to Asia Miles at 1:1 and search for award space on the Cathay Pacific website. First class availability releases sporadically but is findable with flexibility on dates.

The Citi Card Ecosystem and Trifecta

Citi offers three core cards that form a "trifecta" strategy, covering most spending categories at elevated earn rates. Combined, they maximize ThankYou point earning on everyday spending.

Citi Strata Premier ($95 annual fee)

The anchor card of the Citi ecosystem. Earns 3x ThankYou points on flights, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, and gas stations. That is five bonus categories at 3x, which is the broadest mid-tier earning structure of any $95 card. The welcome bonus is typically 75,000 ThankYou points after spending $4,000 in the first three months.

At our valuation of 1.8 CPP, a 75,000-point bonus is worth approximately $1,350. The Strata Premier is also required to unlock transfer partner access for your ThankYou points. Without it (or another premium Citi card), your points cannot be transferred.

Key Benefit
The Strata Premier earns 3x on flights, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, AND gas stations simultaneously. Chase Sapphire Preferred earns 3x on dining and 2x on travel. Amex Gold earns 4x on restaurants and supermarkets but 1x on gas and hotels. No other $95 card matches the Strata Premier's category breadth.

Citi Custom Cash ($0 annual fee)

Earns 5x ThankYou points on your highest eligible spending category each billing cycle, up to $500 in spending per month (then 1x). Eligible 5x categories include restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, select travel, select transit, select streaming, drugstores, home improvement stores, fitness clubs, and live entertainment.

The strategy: use Custom Cash exclusively at one category where you spend $500 or less per month. Most people slot it for groceries or gas, depending on which category the Strata Premier does not already cover optimally for their spending.

Citi Double Cash ($0 annual fee)

Earns 2x ThankYou points on every purchase with no category restrictions. Functionally a 2% cash back card when redeemed for cash, but when paired with the Strata Premier, those Double Cash points become transferable ThankYou points worth 1.8 CPP or more. Use the Double Cash as your catch-all card for any spending that does not fall into a bonus category on the Strata Premier or Custom Cash.

The Citi Trifecta in Practice:

  • Flights, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, gas: Strata Premier (3x)
  • Top category up to $500/month (e.g., drugstores, streaming, home improvement): Custom Cash (5x)
  • Everything else: Double Cash (2x)

All ThankYou points earned across these three cards pool together and become transferable as long as you hold the Strata Premier. For more on which cards to apply for first and how Citi fits into a multi-issuer strategy, read our credit card application order guide.

How Citi Compares to Chase, Amex, Capital One, and Bilt

Citi ThankYou Points are valued at 1.8 CPP, which places them behind Chase UR (2.05 CPP) and Amex MR (2.0 CPP) but ahead of many airline-specific currencies. Here is how each program compares on the dimensions that matter most.

Citi vs. Chase Ultimate Rewards

Chase has the stronger hotel partner in World of Hyatt (1.7 CPP), which Citi cannot match. Chase also transfers to United MileagePlus and Southwest Rapid Rewards, giving it stronger domestic coverage. Citi's advantages: American Airlines access (Chase does not transfer to AA), Turkish Miles&Smiles (Chase dropped Turkish in 2023), and broader earning categories on the Strata Premier vs. Sapphire Preferred. The verdict: most travelers should start with Chase (because of 5/24) and add Citi second to access AA and Turkish.

Citi vs. Amex Membership Rewards

Amex has more transfer partners (20+ vs. 16+) and runs more frequent transfer bonuses. Amex also transfers to ANA Mileage Club, Delta SkyMiles, and Hilton Honors, which Citi does not. Citi's advantages: American Airlines (Amex does not transfer to AA), lower annual fee on the anchor card ($95 Strata Premier vs. $250 Amex Gold or $695 Platinum), and the Custom Cash 5x earning on select categories. For international premium cabins, Amex and Citi overlap significantly on partners (Flying Blue, Avianca, Singapore, Cathay Pacific, Emirates) but Citi provides the unique AA pathway.

Citi vs. Capital One Miles

Capital One and Citi share several partners: Turkish Miles&Smiles, Flying Blue, Avianca LifeMiles, Singapore KrisFlyer, and Emirates. The differentiation comes from cards. The Capital One Venture X ($395) is a premium card with a $300 travel credit, 10x on hotels/car rentals booked through Capital One Travel, and lounge access. The Citi Strata Premier is a mid-tier card at $95. Both programs value around 1.8 CPP. Choose based on which card ecosystem fits your spending and fee tolerance.

Citi vs. Bilt Rewards

Bilt is the newest major currency with an exclusive Alaska Airlines partnership and the ability to earn points on rent payments with no transaction fee. Bilt transfers to Hyatt, United, AA, and Emirates, overlapping with both Chase and Citi. Citi's advantage over Bilt is the deeper airline partner network (Avianca, Turkish, Cathay Pacific, Thai, EVA Air, Qantas) and the higher earning rates across spending categories. Bilt's advantage is the rent earning feature and the Alaska Airlines partnership.

Maximizing Citi ThankYou Earning

The Strata Premier earns 3x on five categories, which covers the majority of most household budgets. Here is how to structure earning across the trifecta for maximum output.

Monthly spending scenario ($5,000/month):

  • $800 groceries on Strata Premier at 3x = 2,400 points
  • $600 restaurants on Strata Premier at 3x = 1,800 points
  • $300 gas on Strata Premier at 3x = 900 points
  • $500 drugstore on Custom Cash at 5x = 2,500 points
  • $2,800 everything else on Double Cash at 2x = 5,600 points

Total: 13,200 points per month, or 158,400 points per year.

At 1.8 CPP, that is $2,851 in travel value annually from everyday spending alone, before sign-up bonuses. Add the Strata Premier's 75,000-point welcome bonus and you are looking at $4,201 in first-year value.

Stack shopping portal bonuses on top. Citi has a ThankYou Rewards shopping portal that offers 2-10x bonus points at hundreds of online retailers. Use it every time you shop online. For a deep dive on portal stacking, see our best travel credit cards guide.

Pro Tip
The Custom Cash resets its 5x category every billing cycle based on your highest spend. If you want predictability, use it for only one category each month. Mixing categories means the 5x applies to whichever you spent the most on, which may not be the category you intended.

Transfer Timing and Rules

Citi ThankYou transfers are instant to most partners. The exceptions are Singapore KrisFlyer (12-24 hours) and a few other partners that may take up to 48 hours during high-volume periods. Here are the transfer rules you need to know.

Minimum transfer: 1,000 points to most partners.
Transfer increments: 1,000-point increments.
Reversibility: Transfers are permanent and irreversible. Once points leave your Citi account, they cannot be recalled.
Eligibility: You must hold the Strata Premier (or another premium ThankYou card) to access transfer partners. The Double Cash and Custom Cash earn ThankYou points but cannot transfer them independently.

Warning
Point transfers are permanent and irreversible. Always confirm award availability on the airline or hotel side before transferring. Search for your exact flight or room, verify it is bookable, then transfer exactly the number of points you need.

For a full walkthrough of the search-first, transfer-second workflow, see our step-by-step award flight booking guide.

Who Should Build Around Citi ThankYou?

Citi ThankYou is ideal for travelers who prioritize international business class on Oneworld and Star Alliance carriers. If Qatar Qsuites, Cathay Pacific, JAL, or Turkish Airlines bookings are your targets, Citi provides pathways that Chase does not.

Citi is also the best ecosystem for travelers who want strong everyday earning without a high annual fee. The $95 Strata Premier covers more categories at 3x than any comparable card. Paired with two $0 cards (Custom Cash and Double Cash), the trifecta costs $95 total annually and covers every spending category at 2x or better.

Build around Citi if:

  • You want American Airlines AAdvantage miles via transfer (exclusive to Citi among $95 cards)
  • You fly Oneworld carriers (Qatar, Cathay Pacific, JAL, BA, Finnair, Qantas)
  • You want Turkish Miles&Smiles access for discounted Star Alliance awards
  • You want broad 3x earning across five everyday categories
  • You already have Chase and want to diversify your transfer partner access

Look elsewhere if:

  • Hotel redemptions are your primary goal (Chase + Hyatt is better)
  • You fly mostly domestic (Chase + United/Southwest is better)
  • You want lounge access bundled with your card (Amex Platinum or Capital One Venture X)

Most advanced points hackers carry Citi alongside Chase and Amex. The three programs combined cover virtually every airline and hotel partner in the world, with minimal overlap and maximum flexibility.
